Healthy Valentine’s Day Recipes

February 12, 2014 a plate that has been made for valentines day

Remember those New Year’s resolutions? Neither do we! One trip to the store and all of a sudden we’re snacking on heart-shaped candies and chocolates. Valentine’s Day brings out everyone’s inner sweet tooth, but that doesn’t have to mean filling up on junk food. Here are a few healthy alternatives to chowing down on chocolate truffles and sipping sugary wines this Valentine’s Day.

Have a Healthy Valentine’s Day

Don’t Drink Your Calories

One glass (see 6 oz.) of wine can contain anywhere from 140-300 calories. Instead, reach for a refreshing glass of fruit-infused water. Cut up plenty of fresh strawberries, raspberries and a few slices of lemon for a low-calorie drink as good to look at as it is to taste. A glass of this sweet, fruity water will add the right hues of pink and red to your Valentine’s Day meal. For the freshest taste, use organic fruits and pure, filtered water from Kinetico!

You Won’t Believe It’s Not Pasta

Instead of a night out at an expensive Italian restaurant, wow your Valentine with a healthy and delicious dish made with our favorite pasta alternative – spaghetti squash. We love the Turkey Bolognese recipe from Martha Stewart using spaghetti squash. It looks almost as good as it tastes!

Guilt-Free Dessert

It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a little chocolate. What if we told you there was a drool-worthy chocolate mousse with only 140 calories and 6 grams of fat per serving? Trust us, it exists. Your date is sure to appreciate your cooking prowess when you serve this up, topped with a few fresh strawberries.

  • 6 oz silken tofu
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips, or 1 and 1/4 chocolate bars in the flavor of your choice (3-oz bars) (or you can use my sugar-free chocolate chip recipe)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/16 tsp salt
  • (optional) 1 to 2 tbsp agave or other sweetener

Using your microwave or stove top, melt the chocolate. Next, combine everything in a small food processor until smooth. If you’re using a blender or larger food processor, double your recipe for an easier blend. Refrigerate to cool. Extra points to you for serving it up in a champagne flute, garnished with a strawberry slice.

We hope these recipes will help you stick to your healthy resolutions while still fully enjoying this fun holiday. Remember, pure water is your best friend on the road to health and fitness.
