Steps to Shiny, Summer Hair
June 11, 2014Heat, humidity and sweat are hard to escape in the summer. This rings especially true at barbecue cookouts, music festivals, days at the ballpark and pretty much any other outdoor event. So when summer rolls around, a lot of us have taken to hiding under those adorably floppy hats or rocking a top knot because, let’s face it, fabulous hair is impossible in this kind of weather, right? Wrong! You can flaunt flowing, frizz-free locks at the next day out by following my favorite hair-saving tips!
You can cut your hair problems in half by starting with healthy hair. Broken and split ends will do you no favors when trying to control frizz. So step one is to start the summer on a fresh foot. Visit your favorite hair salon for a quick trim, to shed split ends and a deep conditioning treatment. If you’d rather deep condition at home, try the Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask. In the last 10-15 minutes of your shower, apply to your hair, snap on a shower cap and let this mask work its miracles. After rinsing, you’ll really feel and see the difference in your hair. (Bonus: It’s only $6.99)
Ever wonder why your hair feels so much better after a wash, condition and cut at the salon? One of the major reasons is the salon’s water. Salons and spas everywhere prefer to use soft water in San Antonio. Washing without those hard water minerals finally cleanses your hair of a waxy soap scum that weighs your hair down and robs it of its shine. (It’s better for your skin, too!) Step two is to have your own quality water softener installed or take to rinsing your locks with purified bottled water. I’d recommend the first though, for environmental and ease of access reasons.
Step three is to minimize the damage you do to your hair. Damaged hair is frizzy hair! This means using a good heat protectant if you blow dry or heat-style your hair. And with heat-styling, as with all the things, the key is moderation. Let your hair air dry as often as you can. To fight frizz on heat-free days, apply Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream. You only need a tiny amount of this buttery smooth cream to smooth and de-frizz air-dried hair.
A few, little things you can do to minimize breakage in your hair is to switch up your brushes and accessories. Make sure you’re using a vented brush, with soft plastic bristles in a soft bed with rounded tops, and update your hair tie collection with the new no-crease, no-breakage ribbon elastics. Making these switches will benefit your hair without breaking the bank.
Nothing happens overnight, but after a week or so, you’ll notice you have smoother, shinier, bouncier, healthier and more manageable hair. Throw on a stylish summer outfit and you’ll be picture perfect at the next outdoor gathering!
