According to the Water Quality Association, having soft water in a home can reduce their detergent use by as much as 50 percent.

The WQA cited studies that found washing clothes with half the typical usage of detergent and soft, cold water removed stains just as well or better than a full dose of detergent and hard, hot water. (There’s also an energy savings there, since cold water doesn’t require your water heater to kick in.)

As for the dishwasher, studies have shown areas with very hard water (like San Antonio) can get the same results with half the amount of soap and soft water.
