Hair and Skin Care for Fall
September 22, 2014Fall Beauty Tips
Today is the first day of fall, and that means it’s time to plan for hair and skin health in the colder weather. Fall and winter are notorious for leaving you with dry, cracked skin and dull, lifeless hair. For years this has been a simple fact of life that men and women alike had to deal with. Not anymore! Thanks to handy little things like science and research, we know more about what our body needs to survive the cold without suffering dry skin or bad hair.
So what’s the ultimate defense against dry skin and hair? Moisture, of course. Unfortunately, moisture cannot live on lotion alone. In addition to finding the right lotion for both your body and face, you’ll need to pay a little more attention to your water. Step one? Drink more of it! If you aren’t taking in the recommended 64 oz. of liquids (water, please) each day, it will affect your energy levels, appetite and yes, your skin! Making the one-time investment of a home water purifier and a reusable bottle will help you save cash and cut back on the amount of plastic waste in landfills.
Remember how we mentioned science earlier? That comes into play in step two: know your water. Chances are that you know if your water is hard or not. What you may not know is that your hard water is the main contributor to dry skin and dull hair. Even the extra hot showers can’t melt away what hard water leaves behind. Check out the cold hard facts on hard water.
- Hard water is full of calcium (and magnesium). These minerals mix with bath products to create a scum that clings to your hair and skin, clogging pores and dulling shine.
- The slippery feeling associated with soft water isn’t leftover bath products. It’s your body’s natural oils. (Without hard water soap scum clogging your pores, they’re free to naturally moisturize your body.)
- With soft water from a Kinetico water softener, you can use less bath products. This helps to lessen the drying out that shampoos and scented body washes can cause.
Choosing the right lotions, drinking enough water and keeping your skin and hair free of hard water buildup can keep your hair light, voluminous and shiny for every fall and winter to come!
