If you don’t know much about water softeners or how they work, it can be easy to believe some of the myths out there. At Kinetico San Antonio, we think it’s important to inform our customers and debunk these myths to help you make the best decisions for your home. Contact us today with any questions you may have, and keep reading to learn a few myths that might change the way you think about soft water systems.

MYTH 1: Water softeners add salt to your home’s water.

Although water softeners use sodium to replace the minerals in your hard water, it’s not replacing them with salt. These systems use an ion exchange process to remove the minerals in your water and replace them with the sodium element (Na) not the salt compound (NaCl). The amount of sodium in your water after softening depends on how hard your water was to begin with. At Kinetico, we offer the most efficient softening systems in the world, meaning lower salt usage than all other competitor systems. Our reverse osmosis drinking water system also removes salt from your drinking water.

MYTH 2: Water softeners purify your water.

A water softening system’s job is to protect your home from the effects of groundwater by removing the minerals that make your water hard. These minerals can leave you with dry skin, brittle hair, cause limescale buildup and leave stains on your appliances and dishes. However, soft water systems cannot act in the place of a water purifier. Not all minerals and contaminants found in groundwater are removed through the water softening process. Give us a call today at Kinetico San Antonio to learn more about the difference between the water purification systems and water softener systems we offer.

MYTH 3: You don’t need a water softener if you live in the city.

Although city water from municipalities will most likely be less hard than groundwater from a well, it usually still has a fair amount of calcium and magnesium – especially here in San Antonio, where we have some of the hardest water in the country. Soft water systems limit plumbing problems and prolong the life of your appliances. You might want to consider investing in a water softening system if you live in the city and you’re experiencing spots on your dishes or your skin and hair feel damaged after you shower.

MYTH 4: Water softening systems cost a lot of money.

Installing a water softener in your home will require an initial investment. However, your system will pay for itself in the long run because of the money you’ll save. Without a water softening system, you’ll spend more money on soap and household cleaners because of hard water effects. Hard water reduces the life of your appliances and decreases the efficiency of your plumbing. You also spend more money on energy bills in the long run since it takes more energy for your water heater to heat hard water.

If you’re interested in learning more about how a water softener can save you money or about common misconceptions, give us a call at Kinetico San Antonio today.
