This may not be the most ideal of experiments for some, but taking cold showers or short baths can have a beautifying effect on the skin. Cold water reduces redness, shrinks pores and provides the perfect foundation for makeup application.

After you shower with warm water, take a splash in cooler water to seal your pores and hair follicles. This prevents excessive build-up of dirt and oil from everyday activities. When your pores are sealed, you are limiting your chances for unwanted acne. This hot/cold method also invigorates and tightens the skin allowing for a younger, fresher face.

Take a shower before you take a swim.

Now that the summer is here, it’s important to know how to protect your hair from excessive damage. Chlorinated pool water and salty beach water are detrimental to your hair. They make your hair frizzy, dry and unpolished.

To prevent this damage from occurring, take a shower or rinse your hair before diving in. Each individual strand will absorb the fresh water, leaving little room for the chlorinated/salty water to swarm in.

DIY: Make your own facial spray.

Rose water has been a beauty trend since the early 2000s when Disney Channel star Hilary Duff raved about its benefits for skin care. It’s easy to make and has a ton of benefits for your skin. It hydrates dry skin, works as a makeup setting spray and can be mixed differently to be used for different purposes.

For a rose water facial mist, mix together rose petals, distilled water and aloe vera gel in a pot and cover it. Place the pot on the stove, and let it begin to get steaming-hot (but not boiling!). Once it begins to steam, remove it from the hot stove. Let it sit for 30 minutes and cool down to room temperature. Finally, put it into a small spray bottle and voila!

You can also use rose water as a leave-in hair conditioning spray. For this experiment you’ll need two ounces of conditioner, four ounces of the rose water made in the previous experiment and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (which extends the shelf-life of the product and keeps the conditioner from clogging up the sprayer). You’ll mix these all up in a bottle and that’s it! Simple and effective.
