What Is Reverse Osmosis?

It’s important to have clean, pure drinking water in your home, and hard water makes that difficult in the San Antonio area. At Kinetico San Antonio, we have your solution. With a reverse osmosis system for your home, you can have access to filtered, purified drinking water every day.

Understanding How RO Systems Work

Reverse osmosis water systems have transformed water purification, taking on projects like seawater desalination and wastewater purification. Before we can talk about reverse osmosis, you need to understand what osmosis is. As a solvent moves through a semipermeable membrane into a concentration of higher solute, it equalizes both concentrations on each side of the membrane, giving you the process of osmosis.

Lost? No worries.

To break that down, visualize a glass divided down the middle by a “semipermeable membrane,” AKA a filter. On one side, you pour a solution of water and salt. On the other side, you pour the “solvent,” AKA plain water. The plain water now moves through the filter to balance out the saltwater side and reach osmotic pressure (the amount of pressure needed to nullify osmosis). Simply put, water passes through a filter to dilute the more concentrated solution.

Now that you understand osmosis, how does reverse osmosis work? Just reverse the process! To make this process run in reverse, you need to overcome osmotic pressure by adding pressure. In this case, the pressure comes from your water pressure when you turn on tap water. With this pressure, the tap water will pass through the filter, leaving unwanted contaminants to be flushed away. All that’s left is pure, clean drinking water. The Kinetico RO water system removes all contaminants larger than 0.0001 microns.

Trusted Kinetico Products

Our Aquakinetic and K5 Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems are brilliantly designed and unmatched in gallon-per-day production and contaminant removal – giving you 99.9% pure water!

  • The K5 removes more contaminants than any other reverse osmosis system by utilizing a multi-step filtration system, including two customizable filters for your area specific problems. We offer Flex Filtration options to customize your system to fit your needs. You can opt for additional protection with the VOC Guard, Arsenic Guard, Purefecta Guard or Perchlorate Guard. Flex Filtration also offers Mineral Plus, an option for those who prefer the taste or health benefits of the minerals that are lost in filtration. K5 owners can pick two of these five options for purified water tailored to their tastes.
  • The Aquakinetic system features a high-capacity, pre-filter reverse osmosis membrane and carbon post-filter. This small, low-maintenance system comes with an attractive lead-free faucet to dispense your purified water for clean drinking.

What Contaminants Does An RO System Protect Against?

Contaminants in drinking water vary from place to place, so it’s a good idea to have your water tested to see what protection you need. With the Flex Filtration options mentioned above, you can choose specific protections designed to fit your needs. The VOC Guard protects against volatile organic compounds that commonly contaminate drinking water, such as cleaning supplies, pesticides and paint.

The Purefecta Guard removes nearly 100% of bacteria and viruses from your drinking water. Viruses like Hepatitis A and bacterial infections like E. coli can be transferred through the ingestion of contaminated water. Kinetico will test your water for free and guide you to the correct drinking water system and Flex Filtration options to fit your needs.

FAQs

What is hard water?

Hard water is water that contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium and sometimes iron.

What is water softening?

The process of water softening is taking the minerals in hard water out, which provides clean, soft water to your home.

Why is water softening beneficial?

The minerals in hard water not only clog pipes and appliances, but they also prevent soap from washing off or out of things easily. Having a water softener system installed ensures your appliances will last longer, your hair and skin is healthy, and your detergent is fully washed out of your clothes to prevent fading.

Do Kinetico water softeners use electricity?

No, they’re fueled by the same water we push into your home! That means they’ll never go out when the power does.
